Thrown Babies?
One of the most shocking superstitious practices within several tribes in South Omo is that of the "thrown babies".  Shocking to us, yet so common in this area that there is an actual word used to describe these children - MingiesMany people, even in greater Ethiopia, are unaware of this practice. Presently, there is little help in rescuing these precious, helpless babies. This sweet little girl was one of the fortunate few.

Superstition dictates that a child whose mother dies in childbirth, or a child who teethes on the top gum first is Mingie - cursed - and will bring a curse on the entire tribe.  Therefore, the baby must die. A cruel and painful death by starvation, drowning or even being buried alive!

You may wonder how a mother could willingly 'throw' their baby?  As we all know, some babies don't show their first tooth until they are close to a year old. Can you imagine?  Can you actually imagine being convinced that throwing your child away is the only alternative left to you?  Can you imagine the pain? Can you imagine?

Many mothers do this against their will, however, as with the female circumcision, women are taught from birth, that to keep a child that is considered a 'bad omen', is to put their lives, the lives of their family members, and the lives of the tribe itself in extreme danger.  To them, it is a heart-wrenching decision to sacrifice one for the survival of many.  Even if they were not willing, the tribal chief inspects the children himself and if they find that a child may bring danger, they ensure that the baby is 'thrown'.

Hirut Children's Village began when a Christian woman named Hirut heard of a baby that was to be buried with its mother who died in childbirth.  Through prayer and obedience, she decided to take the baby and raise it as her own.  Hirut and her husband Dagne now have more children in their care but try to find loving homes for others as well.  Please see our 'Child Sponsorship' page for more information on the children and how you can help!
