Medical Services
Koibe is the medical centre for approximately 100,000 people in this part of South Omo. There is not even one doctor to service this clinic. The only medical personnel here are two nurses with little to no medical equipment, supplies or medications. From the outside, the clinic appears to be housed in a fairly modern building. The inside, however, may tell a different story!
There is little maintenance. Sinks are not even connected to pipes. They have no water anyway! Any water they do have is collected in a tank from the rain that runs off the roof. It is not cleaned or purified and is used mostly in cleaning frocks and uniforms. It is all they have!
From room to room, the picture is the same ... old torn mattresses, very little bedding, everything dirty! The staff is extremely frustrated as they know the conditions need to be better and cleaner - they simply have nothing to clean with!
The administrator of the clinic said he had seen only 3 women come to the clinic to give birth! Small wonder. There are no doctors to administer even the medicines that are available - only nurses to care for 100,000 people!
People say that if you are not sick when you come to the clinic, you will be when you leave!
This is a chart that is kept in the Koibe Clinic in regard to the mortality rate of children 5 years of age and younger. It is hardly accurate, however, as it only reflects those illnesses and deaths that are reported at the clinic. Many families never make it to the clinic and therefore those numbers are not tallied.
We need to dig wells in a safe and effective manner. This is a priority as without clean water, so little else can be done.
