What we consider 'unthinkable' is so common in this area that there is an actual word for the babies that are "thrown". Mingies. To clarify, this practice extends even to children 4 - 6 years old!
The story of a young boy who was 'sent out' and brought to the bush to die, but found his way back to his tribe twice, only to be sent out again, is heartbreaking! In the end, members of the tribe had to take him 130 kms away to prevent his return. The child, understanding all that was going on, was obviously traumitized severely.
Hirut Children's Village is, at present, simply a small building that a loving couple, Dagne Tiba and his wife Hirut have rented to help rescue and care for orphan children. They have also hired a caretaker to help, all from their own meager funds.
Alone, they can do only so much! Your sponsorship dollars will help to continue to care for these children, and many more, whose very lives depend on us. Below is only a list of children needing sponsorship.
The sponsorship program in South Omo is unique in that these children not only have no family, but the communities they are cast out of are often unwilling to help them in any way. Therefore, the cost to care for one of these children is much higher than a child still living with his/her family within their communities. We will soon need to expand the space as well and are budgeting for that in the future too. The ratio for sponsorship at Hirut's Children's Village is 5:1
